Getting around Göttingen by Bus

Here is a satellite map of Göttingen (image courtesy of map.google.com; north is up and east is right), showing the locations of the physics building (blue, at the top), the path of Bus #5 (red), convenient hotels (yellow), and other points of interest (green), including the old observatory and C.F. Gauss' grave. The distance between the train station and the center of the old town is about 500m.

The entrance to the physics building is around the corner from the bus stops labeled "Tammanstraße". Follow the signs to get to the Institut für Astrophysik located on the top floor (4) of the northern wing (labelled "F04"). The workshop will be held in the 5th floor penthouse lecture hall.

The Best Western Hotel Am Papenberg is within easy walking distance of the physics building. The other hotels, restaurants, and bars downtown are easily reached via a 15-minute ride on city bus #5: e.g. get in a the bus stop "Jüdenstraße" when heading north and get out at "Markt" when exiting downtown.

One bus ticket costs EUR 1,70 and four ("Vierer-Karte") cost together EUR 5,40 - they can be purchased from the drivers. A pre-paid ticket is only valid after being stamped by one of the machines in the buses; note that being caught without a valid ticket costs EUR 60,00. A taxi will cost about EUR 10,00 between downtown and the north campus.
